Pipe dream or reality? How you build and structure your
business determines which it will be for you.
Does your business grind to a halt if you are not there? Are
you the main producer in your business? Are you the key
manager who makes all of the important decisions? Do you
hold all of the knowledge in your head and so are constantly
required to guide the rest of the Team? If you answered
‘Yes’ to these questions, I would ask you one more question.
How will you ever escape from the business without selling it
or closing the doors? If you plan to sell it, can you get the
maximum valuation and price for it?
If you are building a business that requires your presence
the majority of the time, you have built yourself a company
that provides you with a JOB!
The ACTION definition of a true business is:
‘A Profitable, Commercial Enterprise that Works without You
(the Business Owner)’
So, how do build such a business? The answer is, you build
it On Purpose. You design it so you will eventually be out of
a job as the owner. This doesn’t mean you can’t work in the
business if you choose, but rather ONLY if you choose. And
if you don’t choose to work, the money comes to you
anyway, in a passive fashion.
Every business has 5 key areas, Sales, Marketing,
Production, Finance and Team. Activities in each of these
areas are undertaken to drive the profitable growth of the
company. This is where the day to day work happens. Let’s
call these Level 1 activities.
Level 2 is where the Management of the company occurs.
Managers are responsible to ensure that all of the activities
in Level 1 happen in the most efficient and profitable manner
possible, and that all these different activities work well in
conjunction with each other. Finally, at Level 3, we find
Strategic Planning activities. This is where all of the time
spent is looking to the future. How do we improve? What if….
we added, changed, reorganized, bought, implemented,
sold, refinanced? What new products or services do our
customers need?
This is where the most important thinking goes on. These
are the Important, Not Urgent activities that will make the
difference between a stunningly successful business and a
business that provides the owner with a job.
The challenge for many business owners is that they find
themselves spending most of their time in Level 1, a little
time in Level 2 and almost no time in Level 3 activities.
In order to build a proper business as defined earlier, the
owner needs to increasingly migrate to Level 2 and 3
activities until they are spending most of their time there.
This allows them to build the Measurement tools,
Operational & Informational Systems & Quality Team that
can operate Level 1 and 2 successfully on their own.
Ultimately, allowing the business to run independently from
the owner.
This is what successful business owners do.
