What’s the difference between highly successful people and
those that are not? Is it that only successful people are
talented, smart, hard working, get all the breaks, know all the
right people?
Clearly not. Many unsuccessful people have all of these
traits and still remain short of their goals. Why is that?
According to a number of people who have studied why
people are successful, success can be attributed to people’s
mindset and the resulting questions asked by that attitude.
All of us face difficulties in our lives that seemingly impede
our progress. For those of us that ask the Why Me?, Why
Does This Always Happen?, How come I can never succeed
in this area?... we never do make much progress. However,
for those who ask How can I turn this situation into a
positive? How can I benefit or learn from this situation?,
What is in this seemingly poor situation that will help me
move forward …they may very well take significant steps
forward.
You are probably familiar with the fact that PostIt notes were
the result of a 3M researcher trying to discover a super glue
that had incredible strength to bond objects permanently
together. Certainly the glue used on PostIt notes does not
hold strongly or permanently, but by asking What would this
glue be good for?, 3M was able to come up with a wildly
successful and profitable product.
Asking the right questions has a lot to do with goal setting
and hitting stretched targets. When we don’t set goals, we
ask limiting questions. Why aren’t we successful, who is
stopping me from being successful, why does this always
happen to me?
These are disempowering questions. They provide a
backward looking view that keeps us mired in past levels of
success and experience. Worse, they put the responsibility
for what happens to us on external factors rather than on
ourselves. (where the real ownership of success or failure
lies)
By setting targets for success, we are forced to ask, How
can we achieve that goal, what will we have to do to prepare
for reaching that goal, what will need to be in place when we
reach the goal so that we can continue to manage our
achievements properly?
These are empowering questions. They move us forward.
They make us feel better, more hopeful and optimistic. They
put us in a mindset of achievement immediately improving
our overall outlook and our overall success!
Having a mentor or coach can help you ask and answer the
right, empowering questions. Having a Business Coach will
help you get the most out of your business by guiding you to
the right mind set and those right questions.
What questions are you asking?
